“In a context where Sri Lanka is slowly emerging from three decades of civil war, and attempting to stitch together a social fabric tragically bifurcated … it seems timely to reflect on the shared history and traditions of Sinhalese and Tamils, Buddhists and Hindus. As a sorrowing yet resilient woman who punishes but also offers succour to multitudes, Pattini/Kannaki is especially a symbol of hope to the many war widows and women-headed households now constituting a significant percentage of the population”.

22 & 23 February 2014
